Who is responsible for which part

Montague puts the private lateral on the owner up to the property line, including its connection there. Section 13.22.060 provides that "It is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain the private lateral up to and including its connection at the property line."

What else is worth knowing

The line is the connection at the property line. The owner must keep the lateral from causing overflows or spills, and the City may inspect it from the building drain or cleanout to the public sewer connection when it reasonably believes the lateral threatens the public sewer. The code's definition has the private lateral extend "to the property line connection with the public sewer". Chapter 13.22 governs property on the City's sewer.

    Montague Municipal Code section 13.22.060 provides that "Failure of a property owner(s) to abate any condition that is causing sanitary sewer overflow within thirty business days of receiving a notice from the city is hereby declared to be a violation of the City Ordinances and Regulations".

    What to do: If the City sends a notice about an overflow from your lateral, have it repaired within thirty business days, to the City's Standard Specifications.

    Why this matters
